Global Bike Tours is brilliant on two levels – they’ll make the world a better place, and a smaller place. Firstly, it’s all about creating jobs that will give a second chance to young, unemployed people, creating skills and unearthing hidden talents so they can move into work.
As a bonus, the Global Bike Tours site brings information from hundreds of tour operators into one place, so that anyone who fancies biking in exotic locations can find all organised tours in a single place. But it’s the building of talent, careers and hope for marginalised young people that remains at the heart of the project.
“Global Bike Tours is one of ten sites that will eventually run under the Global title”, explains Andrew Coulthard, GBT’s director. “I wanted to establish a niche enterprise that could become a platform for opportunities for talented young people, who through circumstance, minor mistakes, or leaving education, might be finding it difficult, even impossible, to progress in life. Through a three-year programme of focused, intense, stimulating work, they’ll find a way into skilled work or higher education.”
So Yoomee was charged with creating the framework for a site that could grow without boundaries, and a platform for the Global offer to develop to accommodate up to 10 portals, each connecting a different audience with a common interest. “So in the near future,” continues Andrew, “we’ll be setting up Global portals for cycling and other adventure tours. Yoomee has given us the facility to create communities bound by these interests. We’re creating communities amongst the tour operators too, which is a new approach. And they are really valuing that. Of course the real measure of success will be the number of young people we help to move forward – I can’t wait to get started.”
