Aimhigher's summer schools are a brilliant idea - they give potential students a taste of university life, especially those unfamiliar with Higher Education and less likely to apply. Summer School Babble is brilliant too - it connects the students before they attend so that they have friendships ready to go and a support network of online friends to chat with.
In its first year Summer School Babble already achieved a 7% reduction in summer school drop out rates. That's 522 students who stuck with it, when they might otherwise have left!
Helen Child from Aimhigher explains - "Summer School Babble is a secure, closed network for these students - somewhere just for them. Having these connections in place means students don't go into the summer school cold - they have arranged to meet up with people they already know. We had to work fast to turn the concept into a reality, and Yoomee were fab and made it happen. I'm so glad they did."
Take-up has been remarkable, with the average time spent using Student Babble outstripping visit time to Facebook. Yoomee's work continues with the development of a second version that will eventually see up to 10,000 students accessing the site and being able to find out all about Aimhigher, connect with new friends, and take part in quizzes and competitions. And that could mean even more converts to HE. Result!
